A journey through Chennai, Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Kumbakonam, Tanjore, Karaikudi, Madurai, Kovalam, Cochin, and Alleppey offers a rich and diverse travel experience through South India’s cultural, spiritual, and coastal treasures. The trip begins in Chennai, the bustling capital of Tamil Nadu, known for Marina Beach, Fort St. George, and ancient temples like Kapaleeshwarar Temple. Heading south, Mahabalipuram enchants with its UNESCO-listed rock-cut temples, Shore Temple, and intricately carved Pancha Rathas, showcasing Pallava architecture. Pondicherry follows with its French colonial charm, serene Promenade Beach, vibrant Auroville, and the peaceful Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Next, Kumbakonam offers a spiritual retreat with its countless ancient temples, including Adi Kumbeswarar Temple and Sarangapani Temple, often referred to as the “Temple Town.” A short drive away, Tanjore (Thanjavur) is home to the magnificent Brihadeeswarar Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the famous Tanjore paintings. In Karaikudi, visitors can explore the unique Chettinad mansions, known for their rich architecture, and savor authentic Chettinad cuisine. The journey continues to Madurai, famed for the grand Meenakshi Amman Temple, Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace, and its vibrant culture. Crossing into Kerala, Kovalam offers a relaxing break with its crescent-shaped beaches, lighthouse views, and Ayurvedic wellness centers. Moving north, Cochin (Kochi) is a cultural melting pot with attractions like Fort Kochi, Chinese fishing nets, Mattancherry Palace, and Jew Town. Finally, the tour concludes in Alleppey (Alappuzha), known as the “Venice of the East,” where serene backwater houseboat cruises through lush canals and paddy fields provide a tranquil and unforgettable end to this extraordinary South Indian journey.

Day 1: Chennai

One of our staff will meet you when you arrive in Chennai to help you check into the hotel without any problems. You can spend the remainder of the day relaxing or walking to neighboring sites like Marina Beach, Chennai’s promenade walk, or local markets. Overnight stay in Chennai.

Day 2: Chennai Sightseeing – Mahabalipuram

Visit Fort St. George and the Government Museum to begin your sightseeing tour of Chennai after breakfast. After lunch, continue driving to the Dakshina Chitra Museum, where you may see traditional houses and exhibits of South Indian tribal heritage. Proceed to Mahabalipuram, the most popular coastal heritage location in South India, after perusing the exhibitions. After checking into the hotel, spend the evening relaxing by the sea. Spend the night in Mahabalipuram.

Day 3: Mahabalipuram Sightseeing – to Pondicherry

Discover the magnificent Shore Temple, Arjuna’s Penance, and the amazing Pancha Rathas—all Pallava masterpieces—at the UNESCO-listed Mahabalipuram sites.
Do not pass up the opportunity to see the historic Varaha Cave Temple and Krishna’s Butter Ball. Drive through the picturesque French colonial town of Pondicherry later in the day, then check into your hotel for the night. Enjoy your time in Pondicherry for the night.

Day 4: Pondicherry Sightseeing

Enjoy a pleasant tour of Pondicherry, beginning in the French Quarter, where you can explore the streets lined with cafes and take in the breathtaking colonial architecture. Take a leisurely stroll down Promenade Beach, visit the local history museum, and purchase some one-of-a-kind handcrafted trinkets. Enjoy your time in Pondicherry for the night.

Day 5: Pondicherry – Kumbakonam (via Gangaikondacholapuram & Darasuram)

After breakfast, leave the hotel and head toward Kumbakonam, a temple city. Visit the shrine of Brihadeeswarar in Gangaikonda Cholapuram on way. The Great Emperor RajaRaja Chola I’s son, King Rajendra Chola, constructed this magnificent temple. It is easy to see the many statues and figures scattered throughout the temple, as well as the enormous Linga deity in the sanctum. Continue your journey to the chariot-shaped Darasuram Airavatesvara Temple. It is extremely amazing to observe the stone sculptures’ elaborate designs. UNESCO has recognized both of these temples as Great Living Chola Temples. Proceed to Kumbakonam via car. After checking into the hotel, you have the rest of the day to yourselves. Spend the night in Kumbakonam.

Day 6: Kumbakonam Sightseeing

Kumbakonam, renowned for its magnificent temples, is the perfect place to begin your spiritual journey. Observe artisans crafting the region’s famous bronze statues and traditional pottery at local workshops. Visit the popular temples nearby before returning to the hotel. Overnight stay at Kumbakonam.

Day 7: Kumbakonam – Tanjore – Karaikudi

Check out of the accommodation after breakfast and begin your journey to Thanjavur. See the famous Brihadeeswarar temple, which was constructed by the king Raja Raja Chola I. With its enormous Linga, striking bull statues, tallest sanctuary tower, and 80-ton monolithic stone atop the tower, the temple is still an engineering wonder. The temple is known as the Big Temple because of its grandeur. After appreciating the architectural magnificence, pay a visit to Thanjavur’s Museum and Palace, which are symbols of the Maratha kings. Proceed to Karaikudi via car. After checking into the hotel, you have the rest of the day to yourselves. Spend the night at Karaikudi.

Day 8: Karaikudi Sightseeing – Madurai

After breakfast, embark on a tour of Karaikudi, which is regarded as the center of the Chettinad region and is home to the Chettiar community, a prominent Tamil Nadu business class. This little village is well known for its magnificent houses, huge palatial homes, and unique Chettinad food. The Chettiars have a custom of holding extravagant occasions, such as traditional weddings, in their ancestral palaces, some of which have up to a thousand windows. Many of these large mansions have been converted into boutique hotels and heritage homestays, attracting tourists from all over the world, as a result of the community’s large expat population. Visit the famous Chettinad House, where you can take in the stunning architecture, spacious halls, central courtyards, and well-thought-out chambers that highlight the unique Chettinad style. After your stay, continue on to Madurai, which is one of India’s oldest cities still inhabited. After checking into your accommodation, spend the remainder of the day as you want. Spend the night in Madurai.

Day 9: Madurai – Kovalam

After leaving the hotel, begin your tour of the Meenakshi Amman Temple. One of the oldest towns in the world with the longest-surviving civilization is Madurai. The entire city is constructed in concentric squares around the magnificent Meenakshi Amman Temple, which is situated in the exact center of the city. Additionally, take in Madurai’s famous sites, the Gandhi Museum and Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal. Continue your journey to Kovalam, Kerala’s unique beach resort, after touring the city. You can stop by Padmanabhapuram Palace on the way. When you get to Kovalam, check into your lodging. Spend the night in Kovalam.

Day 10: Relaxation at Kovalam

Kovalam Beach, renowned for its gorgeous golden sands, calming Ayurvedic spa treatments, and breathtaking shoreline, is a great place to stop and enjoy the sun. There is something for everyone, whether you wish to explore Lighthouse Beach and Samudra Beach or just unwind by the surf. Take pleasure in spending the night in Kovalam.

Day 11: Kovalam – Alleppey

After breakfast, leave the hotel and begin your journey to Alleppey, sometimes referred to as the “Venice of the East.” It is breathtaking to observe the marvelous water networks that link the various locations. Start your cruise by boarding a comfortable houseboat. Savor your time on the houseboat while it navigates the tiny backwaters.
Savor delectable meals that are freshly made by the staff while on board, including traditional Kerala fare. Discover the way of life of the locals who reside on the backwaters’ banks after the houseboat has been anchored. Stay on the houseboat for the night.

Day 12: Alleppey – Cochin

Disembark from the houseboat after breakfast and drive on to Cochin. After checking into the hotel, take some time to unwind. Later, go to Mattancherry Palace, Jew Town, and Fort Cochin. Take in a Kathakali dance performance in the evening, which is an old Keralan art form. The popular Hindu epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, are acted out in the dance play Kathakali. The ornate headpieces and distinctive makeup are the show is highlights. The makeup takes about four hours for every artist to complete. Before heading back to the hotel, take in the lively performance. Spend the night in Cochin.

Day 13: Cochin Sightseeing

En route to Hilltop Palace and other famous Cochin landmarks. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through Cochin’s shopping districts and purchase some mementos to take home. Enjoy Kalaripayattu, a Keralan martial arts style, later in the evening. The concert is a genuinely unique event for this area and is executed with amazing energy. Watch the performers’ courageous moves as they give their all during their performance. Spend the night in Cochin.

Day 14: Cochin

After breakfast, depart the hotel. At the Cochin Airport or train station, you will receive assistance in boarding your flight based on your departure time. Wonderful recollections of South India’s history mark the end of the visit.
